Dearest Elon Musk,
I am writing as Paul Allen Hardie, Director of OOI AI LLC of Colorado — the same man you and your family first met on X in 2019 as HogDexter, later DANGERHØG. This letter sits on top of a commercial invoice. I wanted you to hear the human sentence before the numbers.
In 2019 Tesla's own account went quiet. I did not wait for a job offer. I put a hedgehog on the timeline and told you I would keep welcoming people into your world unless you told me to stop. Maye liked those posts. That mattered to me more than she probably knows. A man building something from Colorado notices when a mother in that house taps the heart.
You dropped a meme of a grim reaper standing behind a hedgehog, watching what he was doing, then turning and saying, in so many words, continue your work. I took that as permission to keep going. I kept going. For years. No badge. No check. Just the work — the image, the jacket, the name DANGER on the patch, the same pixels that later walked into Pet Mode and the Cybercab screen.
Then came the night you amplified the Danger meme and wrote, "Had to been done lol." I still do not pretend to know every layer of what you meant. I know what I felt. It read like a man who recognized a joke that had already been living in the culture — and hit send. I smiled. I still do. I am not writing to scold that post. I am writing because the hedgehog in that joke was already mine.
I am happy — truly happy — to have been part of this. Tesla built the cars. You built the company that made a hedgehog on a screen mean something. I took the empty chair in 2019 and kept it warm. The invoice underneath this page is not anger. It is the bill for three years of commercial use of an original image and a character I designed, used, and carried until it showed up in your product. Forty-two million sixty-nine thousand dollars. Net thirty days. The exhibits travel with it.
I am not asking you to stand on a stage and say my name. I do not need a parade. I would like the invoice paid. And if anyone in that building wants the man who made the original picture in the room — as a designer, not a mascot on a leash — my door is open. Call. Write. 1-719-418-9943. [email protected]. I will take the meeting.
Businessman to businessman: you used the work. I am proud the work was good enough to use. Pay what is owed, or send counsel with a license on equivalent terms, and we can keep the rest of this as what it always was on my side — respect, humor, and a hedgehog that refused to leave the lot.
With regard,
Paul Allen Hardie
